Trying new things

The life of a creative person is to attempt new things. Distraction is the avoidance of attempting new things.

If you never create, you'll tell yourself you can't do it. If you do create, you'll still need to remind yourself that it was you.

The real buzz is creating something you haven't done before. You surprise yourself everyday.

Creativity is about doing stuff you haven't done before. You begin by fearing it. Then you begin to love it.

Life is a fluid situation. Sometimes you gotta get your feet wet.

No one is ready to graduate or ready for the job interview, or ready to work for themselves. But they begin.

So many wait impatiently for a limo, when the bus was all they needed.

No one is ever 100% ready to begin. So many put off the work of their dreams forever.

Procrastination is indecision. Indecision is resistance.

People wait for decades until they feel ready. The world also waits.
You need to actively chase projects you want to do. Or you WILL be doing uninteresting work.

Stagnation is making what you know well. Enthusiasm is for what we have only imagined.

Don't need to wait for a job you've already done. Chase the creative career you want.

Obvious enthusiasm is more valuable than career experience.

You're not the sum of you work experience. Aim for your career expectations.

Don't be distracted by what you can do. Focus on what you want to create.

Stagnation, indecisive, procrastination, unmotivated & frustrated: all symptoms of no clear vision for your future career.

You know you are creating when you say, "I have no idea what I'm doing".

People who know how, didn't know how when they began.

We all imagine a tight-rope between today and our ideal future.

To create is a risk. Not creating is a bigger risk.

10,000 say, "I don't know how", and never start. A rare few say, "I will figure it out" and begin.

Some wait for the perfect time. Some are waiting to be perfect.

We wait until we are ready, willing & able. But we just need to be willing.

People say they aren't creative. What they mean is: "I feel safe in my box".

Many say, "I'm not creative". (Translation: "I got by up till now").

For the past 50 years you could get by without being creative. Not any more.

SUCCESS: It’s not what you do well now, it's what you want to do great.

It's not how creative you are. It's how creative you want to be.

Creativity flows AFTER you start creating.

You won't learn about personal innovation until you take a risk.

Talent, gifts & potential (knowing your strengths)

We owe a lot to the artists of the world. Or everyone will still be drawing stick figures in the sand.

Talent is the magnification on small details. Vision is a filter than screens out other details.

Nothing wrong with admiring the talents of others. But don't rubbish yours.

Our talents are our strength. People who don't know their talents feel weak.

If we really know our talents, we wouldn't want the talents of others.

You definitely have talents. It's just they may look different to how you imagined them.

We need to know the difference between the talents we admire but don't have, & the talents we have but don't as yet admire.

Our talents have room to grow when we see a lot of possibilities in our area of interest.

Talent is the ability to imagine endless possibilities in the things you love.

We need to rediscover the talent of being ourselves.

Successful people came to the realization that the best use of their life is the best use of their talents.

A creative life is the process of exercising one talent, only to find other talents emerge.

Never liked working with numbers. They always assume there is only one answer.

Whenever I find things I can't do, I tell myself, "I must be good at something else".

Perfectionism is bad, but if you focus on your strengths, you'll get pretty close to it.

I don't know what your gift is but I know it's unique.

Much talent is hidden from the world. And our own talent can be hidden from ourselves.

FOUND: One big bag of creative potential. If it's yours, claim it as soon as possible.

I don't wait for luck. I believe in my own creative potential.

I believe that so much potentual creativity goes to waste.

Yes, we are all born creative. It's just that we are all creative in different ways.

Talent isn't what you can do. It's the thing that makes you unique.

Multi-talented and unfocused? Combine them for real creativity.

A creative person believes that their best work is ahead of them.

You know you value your talents, when you value today.

Your power is your natural talent.

Your greatest talent is the expression of your vision.

To have the confidence in the future you want, you need to have confidence in the talent you know you have.

100 billion neurons in your head. Oh yeh, you definitely have possibilities.

Your talents can be revealed in your sensitivity to colors, sounds, contradictions, concepts.

One of my strengths is to find creative ways to compensate for my weaknesses.

Knowing your weakness is also a strength. Makes us collaborative & humble.

Rely on ourselves for what we CAN do. Rely on each other for what we can't do.

Be fair to yourself. You can't rule the world. You can only change it.

Got the music in you? Time to get it out of you.

Your talent is stuff you do easily or quickly. Don't under price your work just because it's easy.

Talent is a seed...

The talented people you admire, can't do things you can do.

Your hands are the gloves your talent wears when you let it do its work.

Talent is like an old friend. You know what he's done, but you don't know what he'll do next.

Can't predict what your talent will do. It will always surprise you.

When exploring your talents, you can imagine the possibilities. But you soon discover they give you many pleasant surprises.

From a friend: "I loved that work you did. Are you still doing that?"

From a friend: "You're talented. You should do something with that".

Your talent will define your direction. Your dedication will define the distance.

Your talent may look different than imagined. But it can also take you places you never imagined.

Talent is first revealed in a persistent day dream.

Talented hands, a curious mind & an enthusiastic heart makes a person capable of greatness.

Talent is a raw mineral, a natural resource. It needs to be refined into it's pure form.

Talent is what you love to think about.

Talent needs character; the ability to do what comes easy, even when life makes it difficult.

Talent makes something easy to do. Education makes it easier to do in the future.

Talent needs to become a skill, to become a service, if that talent is to survive.

Some talents are unique to you. Some talents are common to man but rarely used.

Quality shouldn't be a goal; It starts now in the little things you do.

Success

Outward success is nice, but satisfaction is better.

People will do all sorts of crazy things if they think they will be rewarded for it. -Unknown.

A creative persons greatest distraction is the pressure of showing outward success.

The pressure to justify a creative direction with material success can be too much for an artist.

Sometimes our desire for creative expression & financial success cancel each other out.

Confidence in your talent must exist BEFORE it is rewarded.

Success is believing that YOUR thoughts, YOUR point of view & YOUR ideas have great value. (Write them down)

Success is the avoidance of unnecessary distractions & expectations.

Creative times, are the small deposits of success we invest into our confidence, skills & future.

Success is keep showing up....with enthusiasm

Success is being unique with excellence.

Admire their talent & work. Not just their success.

Problem solving (solution finding)

They says, "Find something you're passionate about". I say; "Find the thing that disturbs you the most & make the solution your purpose".

Be disturbed by unsolved problems. Be passionate for solutions.

When life gives you Brussels Sprouts, make a fuss.

The problem isn't that we don't have the answer, it's that we think we know the problem.

I used to know nothing. Now I know what I don't know.

The most creative know that there is rarely one solution.

There is always a third option.

"Can't do" people need to know what they can do. "Can do" people need to know what they can't.

Hey, the solution is right under my nose!! It's on the tip of my tongue.

Don't rely on what happens between your ears. Solutions can be right under your nose.

Problems are solved in your head, solutions are found around you.

Good problem solvers choose problems , not just solutions.

The world is divided into, "Why I can't", & "Why I do".

"Can't" is the most over used word. "Why" is the most misused.

"Can't" is a poor substitute for 'Create'.

At best, there are many options. At worst, there is always a 3rd option.

A complex situation can be remedied with a simple solution (sometimes).

We don't have all the answers, but there is always an answer close by.

Constructive people build better lives.

A problem is the scratchy stuff that makes us shine.

Many problems are the absence of hope. Many solutions provide that hope.

Fault finding is common, solution finders are unique.

Choose which problem you want to solve. Or a problem will choose you.

Persistence, determination & progress

An artists success is not becoming famous, but remaining an artist.

Successful creatives actually have terrible imaginations. They couldn't imagine doing anything else.

Successful artists lived with the thought that they may never know success.

Half of 2010 is gone. How are your projects going?

Failure is my teacher and success is my role-model.

Someone will always have a reason why you can't do something great.

If we don't create reasons to create, we will create reasons to do something else.

We need to remember the reasons we create. Or we will find many reasons not to.

For some reason people try to control if, when, how, where & what you create.

You're not a machine. You have seasons, rhythms, cycles & a pulse.

Some people are too quick to abandon a life with more freedom when they realize that it isn't free.

Raise the bar, reach for a star.

Been writing about my creative journey. Surprised how determined I've been to stay creative.

I think I'm Will Powered.

"Too difficult" is just something unpracticed.

Some creative people aren't stopped by inexperience, unanswered questions & no guaranties.

People throw rocks on your path but they won't build walls.

This year may have been a disappointment, but what you learnt, you'll need for new year.

Talked to a homeless man today who's writing two novels (at the libuary). His life's work is on a memory stick.

---------------
Excuse me sir, I'm looking for an opportunity. Well son, you just gotta be prepared to go down the road an extra mile.

How can I be sure there'll be an opportunity when I get there? Well, very few go that far but those that do, aren't disappointed.

But everyone I know only does what they're paid to do. Well, I guess that's all they'll ever get paid for.

Ok, can you tell me what I'll find at the extra mile? Don't know, but I'm sure it will something worth the trip.

Alright, I'll go. I'll see you when I get back. Well, better say goodbye now because you won't need to come this way again. The End
----------------
Most of your best experiences will happen because you took the first step.

Yesterdays man will always laugh at the work of tomorrows man (or woman).

People who said, "You haven't got what it takes", couldn't see what you got.

Some people don't see the facts, only flaws.

Every creative giant had to first ignore early critics.
------------------
It's not just mind over matter. But heart & spirit as well.

A refugee can make more of his life than someone with a birthright.

One day you'll shine but first protect that flicker of hope.

The world lays on a subtle guilt when we want to create. Creative expression isn't selfish.

There's only one way to win this year. It must be conquered.

There can be no focus or persistence without passion.

Some people find themselves on the fringe of life. So they create life around themselves.

You'll probably enjoy a lot of fan love one day, but others will spit poison at you along the way.

Innovation

Not everyone has a creative foundation on which you can build an innovative concept.

Good innovation is human centered. Good design is organic.

Great innovation is creative compassion.

Innovation is a better mouse trap. Progress is a better question.

There are no new possibilities without new questions.

A new era begins when people start to ask new questions.

Old problems remain because they're waiting for a new perspective.

The problem with doing what everyone else is doing, you can't do what no one has done before.

Everyone wants to be a leader but not everyone wants to go first.

Current leaders in any field never waited to see what others are doing.

New inventions need new discoveries. New discoveries need new inventions.

Our questions begin as an assumption. And questions reveal false assumptions.

Without the info we need, assumptions become necessary. It's the false assumptions we are taught that mislead us.

Creativity is turning nothing into something. Innovation is turning something into many.

Innovation is improving everything. (Even improve the way you improve things).

Having an audience (& a community)

Let the world see the love in what you do, and they'll love it too.

Be known for what you do. It's not who you know, but who knows you.

A crowd becomes your community when you know your purpose in it.

There are those that follow a crowd. And those that serve a community.

The artist see's the worts, the audience see's the beauty.

If your audience doesn't know what fires you up, you will leave them cold.

Create from what you believe, what disturbs you, what you care about. That is what people respond to.

The only time an artist should re-create something is to re-create what is in him, into the audience.

On your creative journey, you travel through the hearts of your audience.

If every story is a journey. Then the art is to know were your audience is now. And then to take them to a place you want them to go.

Begin by trusting yourself. Then gain the trust of the 1 important person in your life. Then your future audience.

Musicians that sing about Fire, remember being burned. It still ignites their music.

A critic is someone who has just been introduced to the future.

Finding your niche & vocation

I'm thinking of becoming a Polymathic Specialist.

The burning question of most creative artists is, "How can I make a living doing what I love"?

Why do so many people underestimate the value of their talents, uniqueness & passions?

A chosen creative future is the process of taking the vocation inside you & putting yourself inside your vocation.

Your vocation is your talent and personality at play.

Your Resume is your past experience. Your Vocation Statement is your future experience.

Success & Happiness: It’s not what you know, it's knowing what you love.

Creative purpose: Find a big unsolved problem you're passionate about.

Find your niche. Then diversify within it.

Haven't found your Thing yet? ....Try lots of things.

Discovered a good friend of mine is a 'closet artist'. She's been painting in her spare time.
She reminds me of all the artist that love to paint & draw, but don't know what to do with it.

You have many great influences, but it's the style you create from yourself that matters in the end.

Music styles are the Pied Pipers, leading lives in different directions.

I'm not a very good dancer. I'm bad poetry in motion.

The heart is the compass, the mind is the map.

A vocation is the love of growing.

Failure, fear & mistakes

Failure is my teacher and success is my role-model.

We are so easily distracted so we can avoid our fear of failure.

The odd mistake is still a cheap education.

----------------
Creative purpose: "You can be a big fish in a bigger pond too".

Vision: Looking for a bigger pond.

Peer pressure: "Be a small fish like us".

Talent: Feeling like a big fish in a little pond.
------------------

The only real mistake you can make is to never make any.

\/\/\/\ Progress is a zig-zag line /\/\/\/

Do we fear complete failure, or just a failed idea?

Trust yourself: Your ideas, your talents and your skills.

Nothing wrong about learning from a failed attempt.

Successful people profit if they succeed, Successful people profit if they fail too.

A mistake isn't a waste of time & effort. It actually gives you time to think more deeply.

Mistakes are not to be avoided. Some of them will be Happy Accidents.

Divide a big project into small steps...and smaller mistakes.

Experiment often. Fail early.

You can't be truly ready for life if you're not ready to make mistakes.

Put finished work on display. Put abandoned work away.

Yes, I have lots of experience. I've experienced failure many times.

--------------
Pessimists look for somewhere to hide. Optimists look for somewhere to shine.

Pessimists see bad problems. Optimists see good problems.
----------------

They'll claim to see your faults & flaws, But for you will open many doors.
They will laugh, they will snigger, But they'll stay small & you'll be bigger.

Some people don't like change, even if it doesn't affect them or is unimportant. It's just too unexpected for them.

Some people are afraid of the future, so they don't even welcome new & beneficial technologies.

Some people are afraid of being more vulnerable, so they avoid social media.

A lot of people want their life to change, but change is what they fear most. (????)

The media loves bad news, and it gives many people reasons to never try.

People want soft & safe; They make their own Padded Cell. (& slowly go crazy with boredom).

Do you want comfortable, or do you want interesting, surprising & fascinating.

People love success but they love to hear when people fail.

Give yourself a chance to succeed & you might fail. Give yourself a chance to fail & you might succeed.

People waiting for the right guarantee. But I guarantee you, man doesn't have any.

Failure IS an option. (Well, not my 1st option, but achievable).

Success is risking failure. Failure is risking nothing.

I know what avoidance taste like. It tastes like Chicken!

It looked like a wall across my path, but as I got closer I saw stones named doubt, rejection, indecision & failure.

Failing isn't being finished. But an opportunity to be a beginner, without all the extra baggage.

For many, the Twilight Zone is anywhere outside their Comfort Zone.

The comfort Zone is a 8x8 foot cubicle.

The Comfort Zone is a familiar discomfort.

A comfort zone is the fear of the unknown & untried.

Staying outside my comfort zone means being hungry enough to venture out far enough for long enough

The place you really want to be, is OUTSIDE your comfort zone.

"Can't", is often just not knowing how...yet.

Some use facts to do amazing things. Some use 'facts' to do nothing.

Some people never do what they planned, because they found a flaw. (But even successful plans had flaws).

People have a fear of getting hurt. They want to protect their inner child from harm.

Employment

Other employees are only interested in the possibility that your job might be a little better than theirs.

The problem with being an employee is having to listen to other employees talking about their jobs.

Being an employee is often a necessity, but shouldn't become your whole mindset.

Everyone wants financial independence, without thinking or feeling independently.

People who worry most about their future, are the ones that leave their future in the hands of others.

People often feel trapped. But the happiest prisoner is the one planning his escape.

I want to be so ready for this year, that if I loose my job it would be a blessing.

People tend to stop creating for themselves when they start working for a boss.

Over heard a supermarket lady say, "I'm just biding my time". (I'll endure this job until I work out what I want to do with my life).

Work colleague said she's "been in this job too long, but I'm in my comfort zone now".

People spend too much time looking for disappearing jobs Instead, create a new job description.

It's easier to find a job that hasn't disappeared.

Career & experience

  • Remember the time you were told you don't have the experience. I'll never say that to anyone.

  • Give the job to a young artist. Give them the chance to surprise you, & themselves.

People suffer not because they aren't experienced enough. They suffer because they aren't trusted enough.

  • I work with the assumption that you are here because you're good at something.

  • Do you want to convey other peoples content or your own?

Your creative career choice boils down to this: Do you want to create for others or create for yourself?

  • You don't have to be employed as a creative to be creative.

No one likes the career wilderness. It's only the knowledge & ideas you collect that make it worthwhile.

So many find themselves in the wilderness (professionally). As long as you're not wondering aimlessly.

  • Don't need to wait for a job you've already done. Chase the creative career you want.

Obvious enthusiasm is more valuable than career experience.

You're not the sum of you work experience. Aim for your career expectations.

  • Don't be distracted by what you can do. Focus on what you want to create.
  • Stagnation, indecisive, procrastination, unmotivated & frustrated: all symptoms of no clear vision for your future career.

  • I hated Circumstances until I learnt to create my own.

Circumstances come to you. Opportunities you go to.

  • Some innovate for an income. Some innovate for an outcome.

  • A career becomes 'abusive' when it says, "You're lucky to have me. No one else will want you".

Money is no compensation for a career where time, talent & temperament feels wasted.

The artist is a generous soul; He shares unique creations with strangers.

  • Success: Communicate often!

  • They say "There's no money in art", but there are now more opportunities than in any time in history!

They say "A job's a job", but we need to find a way to do what we love.

They say talent is common, but what is knowledge & skill without it?

They say ideas are worthless, but they seeds of a prolific creative career.

They say dreams don't pay the bills, but our world was built on the dreams of others.

  • You don't need permission to be the real you.

Are we looking for creative freedom, or permission?

  • In the race for a better life, time is the greatest luxury.

  • The secret to a successful creative career is....YOU.

Creative progress: Passionate > Proficient > Planned > Profitable

  • Success as a creative: Passion > Talent > Economic model > Transition plan > Realisation.

  • The creative economy: It’s not all about business. Its still your journey.

  • SUCCESS: It’s not what you do well now, it's what you want to do great.

  • Success & Happiness: It’s not what you know, it's knowing what you love.

  • Plan the work. Work the plan.

  • Can't be competitive in the future without being more creative.

  • Can't be prepared for an undefined future without the flexibility of creativity.

  • Create an end goal & work backwards.

  • Go to where the people are. Then create places where people can interact.

  • Creative success: Engage the culture, or have a vision to create one.

  • No matter what you do, you are in the idea business.

  • It's not about who you know but about which network you're in.

  • Creative purpose: Find a big unsolved problem you're passionate about.

  • Design your year & create a great future.

  • To innovate: See things as they can be. Not as they are.

  • To innovate: See things as they can be. Not as they are.

  • You want a big future? . . . Follow that big idea.

  • The beginning of innovation: Value your own observations.

  • The beginning of creativity: Value your own thoughts.

  • Innovation is the ability to improve everything.

  • So many ideas, so little time.

  • Love ideas for their own sake. Some may lead to profit. And some will illuminate you.

  • I get the feeling a lot of people now value any idea only because it could make them money.

  • A treasured idea is no substitute for research, practice and persistence.

  • Ideas can be powerful, but no single idea can be a silver bullet.

  • Change & globalization are everywhere. Creativity is the only way to prepare for the 21st century.

  • A commodity = Competition. Craftmenship = Unique value

  • People don't want to pay much for just a cabinet. But a lot are prepared to pay a premium for craftmenship.

  • It you give people what they need; that's a commodity. It you give people what they want; that's art.

  • An artist needs Task Management, not time management.

  • There are more possibilities for artist now than any time in history. Even more than 5 years ago.

  • The opportunities haven't disappeared for artist. They have just moved online.

  • I've seen artists work in cob-webs instead of on the Web.

  • Even a fine-artist needs their works digitally photographed or scanned, & put online so the world can see you.

  • Every artist needs to be part-digital artist.

  • At some point all art must got digital, if it is to reach your audience.

  • Your most inspiring ideas will be about how to make the world a better place for others.

  • There are some that learn their field, & some that change their field, & a few that create a new field.

  • There are the trendy, and there are the trend-setters.

  • A creative career: Your first customer is yourself. If you love it, others will too.

  • Some are born to be self-employed. Others have self- employment thrust apon them.

  • A photographer uses a camera to see more clearly. A film maker uses his medium to understand the world better.

  • Many artists have talked about their work like it's a relationship. And how it influences his relationship with the world.

  • Creating opportunities: Ask, work, look, connect, read, act fast, be prepared, find a need, be unique, communicate, persist, write ideas.

  • Create a connection between two of your unrelated interests, and that may be the beginning of a unique creative career.

  • Creativity isn't just for the new Creative Economy. It's also to prepare you for the future economy.

  • Can't predict the future, but you can create it. What you can't create, you can quickly adapt to.

  • Why do people assume that doing work you love will pay less?

  • Everything of value has a counterfeit.

  • Spot the difference: No choice -I need to work for someone. No choice -I need to work for myself.

  • Your ultimate value isn't preset by others.

  • A job will compliment you or insult you.

  • Don't let the work you're doing, distract you from the work you prefer to be doing.

  • Don't let what you've done, distract you from what you dream of doing.

  • A job becomes toxic when it erodes your self image.

  • Don't accept any work. Don't be so quick to abandon what you can be.

  • If you don't know what work you want to do, you'll end up doing what no one wants to do.

  • Artists should give more than expected but shouldn't ask for less than it's worth.

  • I heard of an artist who gave art works away. A week after he died, his art was at the auctions.

  • Artists are often generous people. But don't give it all away.

  • Don't wait to be discovered. Discover yourself & show the world.

  • I get my inheritance, not when someone dies, but when I start to live.

  • Choice is so wonderful. Choosing is,...not so good.

  • Choice in 19thcentury: Family trade? Start family? Die young?
  • Choice in 21 century: Do anything? Be anyone? Live anywhere?

  • Young people are so indecisive. You give them 20,000 job titles & they only have to pick one.

  • Job security is a myth. Don't put off your business idea.

  • Expecting pay without guaranteed results, doesn't guarantee you anything.

  • It's all or nothing; You go for a high profile or keep a low profile.

  • Boss' say, "Don't assume". Assuming of course that he hasn't assumed that I have all the info to do my job.

  • Job fact: Your managers position has more value than your commercial value.

  • We get paid to listen to the boss. But don't forget what your heart is saying.

  • If it's not all about need, it's about greed.

  • Not sure about this thing called, 'Mid-life Crisis'. It's probably, Mid-career Stagnation'!

  • People ask, "Is there money in it", long before they ask themselves, "Is my heart in it".

  • I believe in an alternate reality. Most of us already work in it.

  • We don't know what the future holds. Just the hope we can keep & attain which we hold dear.

  • Fortunately the important things don't change. But how we work is changing fast.

  • You can only make it big, by starting small.

  • Success: Not doing everything & surviving everything.

  • Comedians, Designers, Writers; They all live to address the things that bother them the most.

  • Don't envy the success of others & don't be bothered when others envy you.

  • Creative people need to create their own unique definition of success.

  • The pressure to 'look' successful is hard for an artist because of materialism & social positioning.

  • Material success is only one of seven ways to be successful.

  • Society has a limited definition of success.

  • Our chosen work is limited by it's materials, but creativity finds ways to push beyond those limits.

  • People don't look outside the box because they don't see problems as windows of opportunity.

  • We live in a time where ideas can flourish in days, which once took a lifetime to achieve.

  • What most people call success is just a more comfortable version of average.

  • Most of the world isn't successful. Don't let them define what it should look like for you.

  • Not everyone is going to find your work interesting. If you like your work, you'll find others that will too.

  • People won't say, "I love your work but I can't afford it now".

  • Sometimes people will let you assume that your work isn't good enough, to hide their own limitations.

  • People can have personal reasons why they can't buy your work, which has nothing to do with the work it's self.

  • Never criticize your work. Past or present.

  • You can't believe you didn't get that job, but don't stop believing in your ability.

  • People loose their confidence when they don't get a "Dream Job". It's not all about your work experience.

  • People won't tell you why you didn't get that job. Don't assume your experience was a major factor.

  • A critic is someone who has trouble bending their mental pictures & stories to understand your pictures & stories.

  • Often, loosing a job has more to do with economics than your ability. Don't assume you're not good enough.

  • A young Creative has no position to protect. He's free to follow his own path.

  • There is no reward without being rehearsed. No applause without the practice.

  • Create to learn. Learn to create.

  • Creative people know what can be changed, even if most think it's impossible.

  • It's crazy to try & change things you have no control over.

  • Yes you can, but what's your plan?

  • If a mistake isn't public, it's often fixable.

  • Ambition doesn't care how it gets it. Aspiration knows why it's worth it.

  • Aspirations lift people up. Ambition lowers them.

  • A creative leader isn't someone who climbed to the top. But someone who led from the front.
