Trying new things

The life of a creative person is to attempt new things. Distraction is the avoidance of attempting new things.

If you never create, you'll tell yourself you can't do it. If you do create, you'll still need to remind yourself that it was you.

The real buzz is creating something you haven't done before. You surprise yourself everyday.

Creativity is about doing stuff you haven't done before. You begin by fearing it. Then you begin to love it.

Life is a fluid situation. Sometimes you gotta get your feet wet.

No one is ready to graduate or ready for the job interview, or ready to work for themselves. But they begin.

So many wait impatiently for a limo, when the bus was all they needed.

No one is ever 100% ready to begin. So many put off the work of their dreams forever.

Procrastination is indecision. Indecision is resistance.

People wait for decades until they feel ready. The world also waits.
You need to actively chase projects you want to do. Or you WILL be doing uninteresting work.

Stagnation is making what you know well. Enthusiasm is for what we have only imagined.

Don't need to wait for a job you've already done. Chase the creative career you want.

Obvious enthusiasm is more valuable than career experience.

You're not the sum of you work experience. Aim for your career expectations.

Don't be distracted by what you can do. Focus on what you want to create.

Stagnation, indecisive, procrastination, unmotivated & frustrated: all symptoms of no clear vision for your future career.

You know you are creating when you say, "I have no idea what I'm doing".

People who know how, didn't know how when they began.

We all imagine a tight-rope between today and our ideal future.

To create is a risk. Not creating is a bigger risk.

10,000 say, "I don't know how", and never start. A rare few say, "I will figure it out" and begin.

Some wait for the perfect time. Some are waiting to be perfect.

We wait until we are ready, willing & able. But we just need to be willing.

People say they aren't creative. What they mean is: "I feel safe in my box".

Many say, "I'm not creative". (Translation: "I got by up till now").

For the past 50 years you could get by without being creative. Not any more.

SUCCESS: It’s not what you do well now, it's what you want to do great.

It's not how creative you are. It's how creative you want to be.

Creativity flows AFTER you start creating.

You won't learn about personal innovation until you take a risk.

Stuff I've done

STUFF I'VE DONE: Took bus to college with my big art folder. I made it look like a huge air mail envelope. Bus (cont) http://tl.gd/6ujsjj

STUFF I'VE DONE: Worked for another News Ltd paper in the ad dept. Lochlan Murdock didn't pop in either. (Like father, like son).

STUFF I'VE DONE: Worked in a Graphic Design dept of a News Ltd paper. When Rupert Murdock came for a visit, he never popped in to say hello

STUFF I'VE DONE: As Commercial Artist at my 1st newspaper job, some days were so quiet, I would draw jet cars all day.

STUFF I'VE DONE: Of course I loved art class in high school but they didn't grade art so some kids just messed around.

STUFF I'VE DONE: Kids used to get me to illustrate their school projects. They got good marks for initiative but low marks for effort.

STUFF I'VE DONE: The art on my heading pages in my school exercise books were so detailed that I kept the art & through away the books.

STUFF I'VE DONE: When I was 14 & 15, my school made me illustrator for the annual school magazine.

STUFF I'VE DONE: I used to draw so much that my school exercise books looked more like art journals.

STUFF I'VE DONE: By the time I was 12, I had over 50 model planes hanging from the lounge room ceiling. (It was my own air show)

STUFF I'VE DONE: When I was 10, I made an army tank from 'my' junk. It had an old toilet seat as the hatch.

STUFF I'VE DONE: When I was 5, I lived in flats that had a huge junk pile. My 1st playground. One day it was all gone. I was devastated.

STUFF I'VE DONE: I used to make the best cubby houses. Kid next door was so jealous but we had the best junk.

STUFF I'VE DONE: As a kid I used to jump off the house roof with a big plastic bag as a parachute. (I was a paratrooper)

STUFF I'VE DONE: As a kid I used to make a wall of boxes in a door frame & smash through. (I was Superman)

STUFF I'VE DONE: When I was 12, I made a town on my bedroom floor using small boxes, toy cars & soldiers for people. (Young urban planner).

-------------------------------

In the old days (when everything was still in black & white) ...actually, that sums up the newspaper I worked for.

To be fair, newspapers did have color. You could have red or blue. But that was a lot of extra work.

In an early newspaper job, I would keep the drawings & photos in this thing called a Filing Cabinet.

Change is normal; I was a Paste-Up Artist for a newspaper. Yes, thats real 'Cut & Paste' people.

Be open to change. I worked for a newspaper that went from 'hot metal' typesetting to full digital workflow in 4 years.

Persistence, determination & progress

An artists success is not becoming famous, but remaining an artist.

Successful creatives actually have terrible imaginations. They couldn't imagine doing anything else.

Successful artists lived with the thought that they may never know success.

Half of 2010 is gone. How are your projects going?

Failure is my teacher and success is my role-model.

Someone will always have a reason why you can't do something great.

If we don't create reasons to create, we will create reasons to do something else.

We need to remember the reasons we create. Or we will find many reasons not to.

For some reason people try to control if, when, how, where & what you create.

You're not a machine. You have seasons, rhythms, cycles & a pulse.

Some people are too quick to abandon a life with more freedom when they realize that it isn't free.

Raise the bar, reach for a star.

Been writing about my creative journey. Surprised how determined I've been to stay creative.

I think I'm Will Powered.

"Too difficult" is just something unpracticed.

Some creative people aren't stopped by inexperience, unanswered questions & no guaranties.

People throw rocks on your path but they won't build walls.

This year may have been a disappointment, but what you learnt, you'll need for new year.

Talked to a homeless man today who's writing two novels (at the libuary). His life's work is on a memory stick.

---------------
Excuse me sir, I'm looking for an opportunity. Well son, you just gotta be prepared to go down the road an extra mile.

How can I be sure there'll be an opportunity when I get there? Well, very few go that far but those that do, aren't disappointed.

But everyone I know only does what they're paid to do. Well, I guess that's all they'll ever get paid for.

Ok, can you tell me what I'll find at the extra mile? Don't know, but I'm sure it will something worth the trip.

Alright, I'll go. I'll see you when I get back. Well, better say goodbye now because you won't need to come this way again. The End
----------------
Most of your best experiences will happen because you took the first step.

Yesterdays man will always laugh at the work of tomorrows man (or woman).

People who said, "You haven't got what it takes", couldn't see what you got.

Some people don't see the facts, only flaws.

Every creative giant had to first ignore early critics.
------------------
It's not just mind over matter. But heart & spirit as well.

A refugee can make more of his life than someone with a birthright.

One day you'll shine but first protect that flicker of hope.

The world lays on a subtle guilt when we want to create. Creative expression isn't selfish.

There's only one way to win this year. It must be conquered.

There can be no focus or persistence without passion.

Some people find themselves on the fringe of life. So they create life around themselves.

You'll probably enjoy a lot of fan love one day, but others will spit poison at you along the way.

Imagination

Photography is such a wonderful thing. It's not what's in the picture. It is our desire to be in these far off places too.

If it doesn't capture your imagination any more. It's time to explore new mediums and subjects.

People only say, "You're out of your mind", when your imagination has escaped.

Imagination is sweet. Progress should be sweeter.

Only your imagination is perfect. Your work is progress. That's enough.

Never compare your work to others. Not even to your own imagination.

The artist see's the worts, the audience see's beauty.

Perfectionism is toxic. It will poison everything.

Your aim shouldn't be perfection, but progress.

Imagination creates new realities.

Imagination: Your right to freedom of thought.

For me, the key that unlocks my imagination is.....a pencil!

When no one is looking, our imagination comes out of it's hiding place.

Imagination is a creative mind at play. We all have it.

Making connections; they're the games creative minds play.

A visual imagination makes better connections. It's the stuff that ideas are made if.

Don't need to think more. Just connect.

In a repetitive world, everyone prefers to be in a world of their own.

I'm sure, without imagination, we would all slip into a semi conscious coma.

People generally question the imagination of others & themselves.

I'm a figment of my imagination.

The world is the solidification of imagination & elements.

People who can imagine the unseen, recognize each other. They see it in them.

Not everyone has the imagination to see that your ideas are possible.

People think of their imagination as just a small, wild creature that got into their roof space.

Wild imagination is an endangered species. Should be protected.

My imagination has gone too far. Doesn't it know it's limits?

It's just me, my imagination & I.

"It's just my imagination". ("It's just something in me that wants to improve my reality").

My imagination is running away from me. I really should keep up.

You're not limited by your imagination. Your imagination is limited by you.

People quickly become bored without electricity. Have we forgotten how to think for ourselves?

For many, a good imagination has been replaced by a good connection or good reception.

Entertainment should spark imaginations. Not replace it.

Some people can't imagine what they can do without an output device. They could do a lot & output a lot.

We have wild imaginations. Our intuition is our instincts. Creativity, our wilderness to explore.

If we loose our imagination, we loose track of who we are.

The thing that sparks your creativity is the flint of imagination.

Imagination is a strange machine. It's kind of a 3D augmented virtual reality x-ray holographic daydream projection device.

Without imagination, a lot of knowledge would be wasted.

Knowledge is gained in activity, imagination in stillness.

Knowledge is the distillation of the ages. Imagination is the essence of the individual.

Knowledge is earned, imagination is a free gift.

Knowledge is a seed. Imagination waters it.

We are given imagination so we know what our talents are for.

Drawing is a better way to imagine, & to communicate your ideas.

A drawing is proof of your imagination. The hardcopy of your hopes.

An active imagination is exercise for a healthy mind.

Imagination is a way to escape the present, & a way to chase the future.

A creative perspective often sees what is imagined, interacting with what is seen.

Imagination includes things to what you see, that seems missing from your view.

Imagination is the alternate reality overlaid onto your present reality.

We see with out brains. Our imagination are the doodles we draw on those mental images.

Imagination is the transparency that overlays your visual perception.

Knowledge comes by reading, research & revision. Imagination comes by reflection.

Knowledge trickles. Imagination flows.

Very little appears possible without imagination.

What boosts imagination, lifts the world. What infects imagination, makes it afraid.

People who were ahead of their time, allowed their imagination to run ahead of them. Then they ran after it.

Failure, fear & mistakes

Failure is my teacher and success is my role-model.

We are so easily distracted so we can avoid our fear of failure.

The odd mistake is still a cheap education.

----------------
Creative purpose: "You can be a big fish in a bigger pond too".

Vision: Looking for a bigger pond.

Peer pressure: "Be a small fish like us".

Talent: Feeling like a big fish in a little pond.
------------------

The only real mistake you can make is to never make any.

\/\/\/\ Progress is a zig-zag line /\/\/\/

Do we fear complete failure, or just a failed idea?

Trust yourself: Your ideas, your talents and your skills.

Nothing wrong about learning from a failed attempt.

Successful people profit if they succeed, Successful people profit if they fail too.

A mistake isn't a waste of time & effort. It actually gives you time to think more deeply.

Mistakes are not to be avoided. Some of them will be Happy Accidents.

Divide a big project into small steps...and smaller mistakes.

Experiment often. Fail early.

You can't be truly ready for life if you're not ready to make mistakes.

Put finished work on display. Put abandoned work away.

Yes, I have lots of experience. I've experienced failure many times.

--------------
Pessimists look for somewhere to hide. Optimists look for somewhere to shine.

Pessimists see bad problems. Optimists see good problems.
----------------

They'll claim to see your faults & flaws, But for you will open many doors.
They will laugh, they will snigger, But they'll stay small & you'll be bigger.

Some people don't like change, even if it doesn't affect them or is unimportant. It's just too unexpected for them.

Some people are afraid of the future, so they don't even welcome new & beneficial technologies.

Some people are afraid of being more vulnerable, so they avoid social media.

A lot of people want their life to change, but change is what they fear most. (????)

The media loves bad news, and it gives many people reasons to never try.

People want soft & safe; They make their own Padded Cell. (& slowly go crazy with boredom).

Do you want comfortable, or do you want interesting, surprising & fascinating.

People love success but they love to hear when people fail.

Give yourself a chance to succeed & you might fail. Give yourself a chance to fail & you might succeed.

People waiting for the right guarantee. But I guarantee you, man doesn't have any.

Failure IS an option. (Well, not my 1st option, but achievable).

Success is risking failure. Failure is risking nothing.

I know what avoidance taste like. It tastes like Chicken!

It looked like a wall across my path, but as I got closer I saw stones named doubt, rejection, indecision & failure.

Failing isn't being finished. But an opportunity to be a beginner, without all the extra baggage.

For many, the Twilight Zone is anywhere outside their Comfort Zone.

The comfort Zone is a 8x8 foot cubicle.

The Comfort Zone is a familiar discomfort.

A comfort zone is the fear of the unknown & untried.

Staying outside my comfort zone means being hungry enough to venture out far enough for long enough

The place you really want to be, is OUTSIDE your comfort zone.

"Can't", is often just not knowing how...yet.

Some use facts to do amazing things. Some use 'facts' to do nothing.

Some people never do what they planned, because they found a flaw. (But even successful plans had flaws).

People have a fear of getting hurt. They want to protect their inner child from harm.

Enthusiasm & optimism

Enthusiasm is constant, even if the body can't always express it.

Enthusiasm isn't an emotion. It's an active love & a persistent devotion.

Enthusiasm is unstoppable; progress encourages it & barriers focus it.

Enthusiasm infects all that you do, & people that you share it with.

The most generous are people who share their enthusiasm.

Enthusiasm is prolonged inspiration.

Even an optimist needs a life boat.

I'm an optimist, but even a pessimist with a plan is better than an optimist without one.

Even in the good times, we need an escape plan / transition plan / life plan.

Curiosity & learning

People become more creative when they allow their curiosity to be inspired by simple things.

Not everyone has the opportunity to study. But everyone has the freedom to learn.

Curiosity is the love of learning. Endless boredom is the price of indifference.

University is heaven for the curious and paradise for the creative.

If we're not learning, we become robots running on old, pre-installed programs.

We learn interesting things about ourselves when we are learning other interesting things.

Few things are finer than learning interesting things with others.

You may find that some of your best times were learning new things at your pace.

There are Students and Stagnates. Those who keep learning and those who stop.

I wonder if I'm too curious. I feel like an ant exploring an oak tree.

A creative soul is rarely bored. He always packs a big lunch for a hungry curiosity.

Curiosity is like a close friend. Imagination like a brother.

Creativity is ultimately the exploration of personal curiosity.

We can wish to be a master, or we can create today with the heart of a student.

Common knowledge, prevailing wisdom, seedless watermelon. Don't accept it just because most believe it.

Logic looks for instant satisfaction, curiosity is far more patient.

Been away for a while. Needed some in-put time. I love learning new things.

You succeed if you earn but if you only learn, you still succeed.

An artist doesn't need to know all the answers. They can just ask the question.

See more intentionally, Feel more sensitively, Think more independently.

I'm learning too much at the moment, to get an education.

You are a theory that needs to be tested.

I've always been curious. What makes me tick?

If you're a mystery to yourself, then the world is a mystery.

Your life is a journey of discovery. Begin with you.

Life can be a mystery. You shouldn't be.

Creativity is a life of discovery. -Of your unique talents, personality, dreams, voice & niche.

A laboratory curiosity is an observation without imagination.

The great pillars of discovery should never be just silos of knowledge.

Knowledge is relative, truth is absolute.

Feed your curiosity. Don't drip feed it.

Bad television is the gradual transition from a bad education.

Today is 'National awareness of nothing in particular day'.

Restlessness, is the hunger pains of an unfed curiosity.

More people would have a photographic memory, if they took off the lens cap.

We create with what we know, to explore what we don't know.

An artist sees more, a musician hears more.

The most observant are deaf. The best listeners are blind.

Most of us have excellent hearing & eye sight. Unfortunately, most of us can't do them well at the same time.

We see & hear unconsciously. -It's a common problem.

The future belongs to the people that are curious, creative & open to change.

Apart from boring work, there isn't any reason to be bored.

In a digital world, we need to focus on what we need now. Not on what we might need later.

Entertainment shouldn't be an escape from reality, but give a hunger for more of it.

You never know what you'll find when you become curious. But that's half the fun.

When you're open, things flow to you. When you're creative, things flow out.

Have an intense curiosity about you. What are you reeealy capable of?

A tragedy is someone who wants to learn but can't. And someone who can learn but won't.

Man digs for rare minerals in the depths of the earth so he can see the colors of a distant galaxy.

Curiosity is the remedy for conscious ignorance.

Knowledge is empowering. Words have the power to bridge the divide.

Confidence comes from knowing how to begin. And yet still beginning, knowing there is still much to learn along the way.

Listen twice as much. Believe what you hear half as much.

Read as much as you can. Let it stimulate your thinking, not replace it.

Curiosity isn't a hungry mind, but a feast for a growing identity.

A great curiosity, creates a great talent.

Don't have much? At least you have talent. Even if you didn't have talent, curiosity will be rewarded.

A seeker may accept a lie, but will eventually find the truth. Someone sure of his truth, will end up with lies.

Curiosity is the best teacher.

The seeker finds much more than he seeks. He finds an interesting path just for himself.

Busyness is the death of curiosity.

You don't know what you don't know. -Unknown

Knowing is easy. People who believe it's difficult or expensive, won't get far.

Creativity is...

  • Creativity is the opportunity to make something possible.

  • The world says, "How is that possible?". Creatives say, "How can I make it possible?".

  • Creativity is great therapy. Rediscover the joy of writing, image making or music.

If it wasn't for Everyday Creativity, I wouldn't feel too creative some days.
  • Creativity is for today. Imagination is for this moment.

  • Before the innovation age, you had choices. You could pick potatoes, pumpkins or cotton.

What would the world be like without creativity? An out-house without toilet paper.

If it wasn't for creativity, half of us would be farm-hands & factory workers now.

  • Fortunately the world is full of 'fads' that never went away.

Without 100 years of creativity you would most likely be collecting firewood about now.

Why is creativity important? We have electric light because someone burnt the midnight oil.

Is creativity important? When was the last time you handwashed your clothes with whale sope?

  • Nothing focuses creativity more than the point of a pen.

  • Creativity is firstly the process of forming new connections, associations or repurposing ideas, objects & even people.

  • Creativity is active optimism despite the obstacle.

  • Creativity is like a volcano: an eruption followed by disruption.

  • History: Man coping better with nature. Creativity: Man coping in advance.

  • Creativity is thinking outside the half empty square : )

  • Creativity is when new relationships between ideas & people are encouraged to form.

  • Creativity without action isn't creative.

  • Creativity isn't about escaping reality. It's about reclaiming it.

  • Chaos is a word for order we don't understand yet.

  • If everyone agrees with, chances are, you're not doing anything original.

  • Creativity is proving yourself wrong about what you know is impossible?

  • Creativity isn't just a way of thinking. It's a way of living.

  • Creativity is applied optimism.

  • Creativity is hope in action.

  • The purpose of being creative is to repurpose.

  • Research is finding connections. Creativity is making them.

  • Discovery is a jigsaw puzzle, creativity is a mosaic.

  • We all construct patterns of thought but creativity seeks to remove them.

  • The three levels of creativity: 1/Repurposing, 2/connection & 3/metaphor.

  • Intelligence looks for a quick solution. Creativity looks for possibilities.

  • Creativity is the ability to consider multiple options.

  • ---------------
  • Creativity: Man V's time.

  • The artist: Man V's todays trend.

  • An artists dream: Man V's 'common sense'.

  • Drama: Man V's an adversary.

  • Comedy: Man V's gravity.
  • ----------------

  • Creative thinking if fine but it's the creative heart of one person that becomes the agent of change.

  • Creativity is the way you relate to the world. It isn't a force or power or energy. Creativity is personal and human.

  • We create relationships with our ideas, our surroundings, our medium, subject, field, career, audience & our art.

  • Creativity is a relationship with many things.

  • Creating is like breathing: Observation (in), record ideas (out), verify (in), public expression (out).

  • High IQ's seize the day, Creatives change tomorrow.

  • Creativity is: Just connect. Make connections between unrelated things. Create a relationship between unrelated objects, ideas & knowledge.

  • There is an unbroken line of emotion from the very first song to the latest.

  • Creativity happens at the intersection of conscious & subconscious. And left & right brain.

  • Creativity is compensation for lack of money.

  • Creativity is the continuous dissolving of partitions. Crazy people just take it way too far.

  • Creativity is to play with combinations. Of colours, ideas, words, images & concepts... Let's play.

  • Creativity finds new expressions of faith, hope & love.

  • Creativity is finding new ways to share your enthusiasm.

  • A metaphor, it's like when you say 'It's like...."

  • A metaphor is the unfamiliar clothed in the familiar.

  • Interesting things happen when you expand your definition of creativity, design or art.

  • Creative people create connections, communicate connections, repurpose connections.

  • The less you have, the more useful creativity is.

  • Creativity is life's element of surprise.

  • Creativity is failing to be normal.

  • Destructiveness makes life complicated. Creativity makes life simpler.

  • Creativity makes things simple to understand, & makes great skill look easy.

  • Tools overcome physical limitations, Creativity overcomes environmental limitations.

  • Creativity is like nature: It's adaptive, it adhores a vacuum, it sustains us, & it's interconnected.

  • Life is wonderful complexity. Creativity is wonderful simplicity.

  • Creative people define popular culture. Imitators just popularize it.

  • Creative is Cool. Cool in not creative.

  • Times of intense creativity won't make you crazy. Even if average people think you are.

  • Creativity would strike more people if they weren't earthed to common assumptions.

  • If you want creativity to strike, your pen is the lightning rod.

  • Creativity is like static electricity. We unknowingly collect it as we rub shoulders with life.

  • Creativity is like a capacitor, collecting a charge slowly, but often released all at once.

  • Creativity blurs the lines between seeing & imagining.

  • Curiosity is the opportunity to learn interesting things that you didn't intend learning.

  • Creativity questions common assumptions. It's doesn't agree with the 'wisdom of crowds'.

  • Creativity makes new connections. Intuition senses that potential connections are closer than normal.

  • Creativity exists dispute social & cultural normalization.

  • The best creativity is one that encourages more creativity.

  • Creativity flows in fluid situations.

  • Physically, man isn't remarkable. Creatively, man is incredible.

  • Man learns to use tools (Skill). Man uses tool for new purpose (Creative). Man makes new tool (Invention).

  • Creativity is an unpredictable thing, that makes the future less unpredictable.

  • Creativity takes me places I haven't been. It prepares me for a future I haven't seen.

  • The power of creativity is love, The effectiveness of love is creativity.

  • There's only one thing greater than a creative spirit, & that is a spirit of love.

  • Logic likes to understand. Creativity likes to be puzzled.
